Since that time,aqueous CHG agents havebeen widely used as an effective antiseptic handwashing andsurgical scrub . The useof CHG for antiseptic skin prepping was studied in the early 1990s. Dr. Maki compared the use of 2% aqueous CHG, 70% Alcohol, and 10%Povidone-Iodine (themost common iodophor) for skin prepping prior to surgicalprocedures . The results of thisstudy showed that use of an aqueous 2% CHG substantially reducedthe incidence ofprocedure-relatedinfections . Another study showed Chlorhexidinewas moreefficacious than Povidone-Iodine skin preparation in reducingcontamination of blood cultures.² In recent time,antiseptic skinprepping agents that contain a combination of two antiseptics,CHG/IPA, arefavored by clinicians.
